About Hard Life Art Club

The History of the Hard Life Art Club
Our club
The group began in May 2009 at the Mkombozi Centre for Street Children (now just called Mkombozi). This group of talented youth have grown up in difficult conditions without family support for education and basic needs as a child. After moving to live on the streets, which can be seen as the only option to survive, they were introducted to Mkombozi and are grateful to have education and health care now as a result of being at Mkombozi.

In spite of their hardship they have created something of themselves in this group, Hard Life Art Club. After completing their school studies, during which they had a strong focus on art, these boys established a small gallery and studio at the Mkombozi residential centre. But since May 2011 the founding members of the group moved out of Mkombozi and into independent living or group housing. Therefore the group has now moved their studio and gallery from Mkombozi to a small building in Rau. They have established art classes in Rau for teaching kids from the community and those from the streets. They continue to manage the group and its studio on their own.

At their studio in Rau they can be found painting and creating crafts after school and on the weekends. The proceeds from their sales goes towards purchasing more art supplies to support the whole group.  They are dedicated to improving their art and would like to become famous for their art and teach other young children to draw and create crafts.

How We Work

Art training at Mkombozi
The Hard Life Art Club is now working with more than 50 kids, both male and female, from 3 centres for street kids and from the community. The Hard Life Art Club has four founding members, all youth, who manage the studio, teach kids and arrange the teaching timetable.

Our Mission

To improve the talents of kids in visual art, both street kids and kids from the communities. To empower kids to employ themselves through visual art and handcraft.

Our Vision

We believe that by educating kids who are living on the streets through art, we can build up a strong community which will care for the talents of kids.
